Charisma Carpenter has apologized to Eliza Dushku for not supporting her when she revealed her history of sexual assault on the set of True Lies.
Charisma Carpenter has issued a public apology to her Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Eliza Dushku for not supporting her when she came forward with her own assault revelations in 2018.
“I owe you an apology,” Carpenter wrote in the comments of Dushku’s Instagram post supporting the former’s statement regarding abuse allegations against Joss Whedon. “I never lent my voice to you privately nor publicly when you shared your truth after suffering sexual misconduct in the workplace. As I wrote to you privately, this makes your statement of support sweeter. And as I said to J, your loving embrace empowers others to feel safe to share their stories. Thank you for being who you are. Thank you for your inspiring words of support. I will never forget how you have made me feel.”
In 2018, Dushku alleged that Hollywood stunt coordinator Joel Kramer sexually molested her at the age of 12 while working on James Cameron’s True Lies. “Ever since, I have struggled with how and when to disclose this, if ever,” Dushko wrote in a Facebook post. “At the time, I shared what happened to me with my parents, two adult friends and one of my older brothers. No one seemed ready to confront this taboo subject then, nor was I.”
Charisma Carpenter showed her support for Ray Fisher by releasing a statement alleging Joss Whedon of abuse and unprofessional behavior while on the sets of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. “My truth. #IStandWithRayFisher” Carpenter tweeted with her statement. The #IStandWithRayFisher hashtag is a show of solidarity with Ray Fisher, who first went public with abuse allegations against Whedon on the Justice League set in July 2020.
“For nearly two decades, I have held my tongue and even made excuses for certain events that traumatize me to this day,” Carpenter began. “Joss Whedon abused his power on numerous occasions while working together on the sets of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. While he found his misconduct amusing, it only served to intensify my performance anxiety, disempower me, and alienate me from my peers. The disturbing incidents triggered a chronic physical condition from which I still suffer. It is with a beating, heavy heart that I say I coped in isolation and, at times, destructively.”
Since releasing her statement, other Buffy and Angel alums like Sarah Michelle Gellar, David Boreanaz and more have come out in support of Carpenter. Michelle Trachtenberg also responded to Carpenter, backing up her allegations against Joss Whedon
